A little planning and imagination can go a long way with this budget-friendly hoisin pork ribs meal.
Ingredients
- 1kg pork ribs
- 1/4 cup (60ml) hoisin sauce
- 1/4 cup (60ml) plum sauce
- 2 tablespoons dark soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons dry sherry or shaoxing wine
- 2 garlic cloves, crushed
- 1 tablespoon finely grated ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon Chinese five-spice
- 1/2 cup (125ml) water
- Green onions, trimmed, thinly sliced, to serve
- Toasted sesame seeds, to serve
- Steamed jasmine rice, to serve
Method
- Step 1Combine the pork, hoisin sauce, plum sauce, soy sauce, sherry, garlic, ginger and five-spice in a large glass or ceramic bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 3 hours to marinate.
- Step 2Preheat oven to 180°C. Place a wire rack in a large roasting pan. Place the ribs on the rack. Pour water into the pan. Cook, turning occasionally and basting with marinade, for 45 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from oven.
- Step 3Divide the pork ribs among serving plates. Sprinkle with green onions and sesame seeds. Serve immediately with rice.

Tip: To make your own Chinese five-spice, roast Szechuan pepper, add star anise and grind, then add ground cloves, cinnamon and fennel seeds.
