Oriental Love Affair

Author Notes: This drink is made with Sake and lychees with a drop of Cranberry juice to give it a pink colour.

Sake is a rice based alcoholic drink from Japan and has an alcohol content of about 15 to 20% alcohol.

I love to make experiments with different flavours and found exactly what I needed – a sake with lychee notes – Hana Lychee Flavored Sake. Go ahead and use normal Sake if you can’t find this one.

Sake is quite low in alcohol so it makes the perfect aperitif for me.

—Maria Teresa Jorge

Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 200

    milliliters Sake
  • 8

    canned litchee fruit – pitted
  • 8

little pieces of fresh ginger to fit inside the litchees
  • 1

bottle of Sauvignon Blanc or other dry white wine
  • 4

    splashes of cranberry juice
  • 4

    splashes of lime juice

Directions

  1. Fit the ginger in each lychee and macerate in the Sake for 15 minutes or more, depending how much ginger flavour you want to impart on the drink.
  2. Put 2 lichees per glass.
  3. Add a splash of cranberry juice and a splash of lime juice.
  4. Add the Sake and top with the White Wine (I used Sauvignon Blanc because I find it acid and fresh to cut the sugar of the canned lychees).
  5. Drink to your content!
